Wind speed meter

A wind speed meter such as the Skywatch one shown below is a very useful way to determine which kite to fly when you are learning:

They can usually be used to measure current, average and maximum speed of the wind.

There are two basic types, those with cups like the one shown above, and the fan type. The cup versions are much more accurate, as they are not so directional and do not need to be faced in a particular direction with respect to the wind.
