Safe places to fly

The best places to fly are on uncrowded flat beaches, with hard sand. This is because the wind is smoother and less gusty by the coast.

Obviously not everyone is as lucky to live near the coast, so for people that live inland the best place is a flat field that is at least 500m by 500m as the wind can come from any direction. It is better to have a kiting area with no goal posts or obstructions such as park benches, but it is not essential. Your local park could be one place to go as long as there are not too many people there. I do not recomend kiting in a car park or tarmaced area, because when you enivitably fall off your board or out of your buggy it will be a hard landing. Do not kite near power lines, for obvious reasons. The places you fly also depend on the type of lines you should use. If you fly near a city, the air is more poluted and gusty, so you may want to invest in longer lines as the air further up is cleaner and smoother. This is not essential, but it can help.

Set up your kite about 100m downwind from any trees as it is easier to kite in smoother air. Make sure that their is a considerable distance between you and any other objects downwind, as when kiting for the first time you will notice you go downwind quite alot. You also must remember that your kite lines are another 20 meters long, so do not kite 20 meters away from a barbed wire fence or trees as if you lose control of the kite you may end up ripping your kite.
