The popular HA1375 snatch block, made by Holt Allen is shown below both closed and open:

The spring clip holds it closed firmly when in use and fits into a notch on the pin that goes through the pulley. The pulley is not lubricated, and best just rinsed with plain water after each use. Grease should not be used as it attracts sand and dirt.

The advantage of a snatch block over a standard pully is that it can be transferred from kite to kite very easily.

Standard closed pullies cannot be removed easily without untying the strop. Open pullies like the Petzl type, have a habit of falling off and getting lost when the safety is used over sand, so the snatch block is the optimum solution, though more expensive.
